Volunteers bring friendship and companionship to seniors and homebound adults through home visits and phone calls to those who are isolated from the outside world. Weekly or biweekly calls or visits are recommended, but we request connecting at least once a month with your client.

Volunteers deliver frozen, kosher meals on a weekly basis for homebound and convalescing adults who need extra assistance.

This JFCS Patient Partners program, the prototype of which was purchased from Jewish Family Services of Ann Arbor, Michigan, offers seniors a trained volunteer patient advocate, who accompanies the patient to doctor appointments, records medical information and helps the patient make sense of medical terminology, prescription information, and communication between the physician and the patient.

Jewish Celebrations

Are you a retired teacher, social worker, or have any experience with groups? Or maybe you share a strong passion for  Jewish education and Jewish holidays? Please consider joining us for a NEW volunteer experience bringing Jewish celebrations to older adults in facilities who otherwise don’t have access to it. This would be a 1-year commitment of approximately 2 hours per month. Each volunteer would facilitate a one-hour universally themed program focused on holiday celebrations and topics of Jewish cultural and historical interest such as:

Volunteers will be assigned to one assisted living facility or other apartment complex in South Jersey. The curriculum is being created by Rabbi Nathan Weiner and Reva Farenback-Brateman, JFCS Geriatric Social Worker. Training may be held quarterly. Days and times at each facility are flexible based on your schedule. Some facilities do not allow minors, so we will match you with an appropriate facility based on your preferences. Interested volunteers must be fully vetted by our agency. Additional vetting may be necessary depending on the facility.

Assist or accompany individuals with memory challenges. Volunteers interact and participate in events and activities for those with memory loss, dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

You would need to be partially vetted prior to being accepted in this role. The process includes fulfilling certain qualifications such as references and signing waivers.

 

Volunteers are needed for various JCC Enrichment Programs.  Volunteers are needed to host programs, help with planning, and provide overall general support.  Audio visual skills a plus. See specific programs needs below.

Center for Learning & Growth (CLG) Evening Programs:

Programs vary but generally fall on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings 6-8:30pm.

Dates vary but include June 5, 9, 10, 16, and 17. 

Adult Enrichment Department Daytime Programs:

Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 9:30am-12pm, and Thursdays 12:30-3pm.

Volunteer support is needed to welcome and check-in registrants.

50+ Chai Games:

Sunday August 10 from 8am-3pm at JCC Camps at Medford.

Volunteers needed to help plan and support the following competitive events:  basketball, pickleball, swimming, table tennis, trivial pursuit, kayaking (weather dependent).  Help is also needed with check-in, medical support, food serving, and event setup/cleanup.

Volunteer to assist individuals with low vision to and from the parking lot to the building for informative and engaging low vision workshops. Volunteers also may stay during workshops to help with various tasks including activities, restroom accompaniment, and surveys.

The Katz JCC is bringing back its adult 60+ lunch program to offer socialization, lunch, and activities for members and non-members. Starting immediately, they are looking for volunteers to help each week Monday through Friday (2 hour shifts are available), beginning February.

Opportunities include:

Greeters - Welcome and direct members and non-members to lunch and/or programs during the late morning before lunch. Administrators - Assist lunch program participants onsite to complete intake paperwork. Adult Lounge Host - For those who come early before lunch is served, greet members in the lounge and coordinate games (this includes set up and clean up of those games). Servers - Support JCC staff by serving meals to tables or set-up and support in the kitchen.

All candidates will be interviewed by JCC staff and placed, if appropriate, into different shifts and roles.

Catered Home Delivered Meals

Packing is usually done on Tuesdays from 9 AM-11 AM and distribution of those meals to other volunteers to make the deliveries is usually Tuesdays from 11 AM - 1 PM, although the day and time may change to accommodate holidays. Someone will call you when you there is a need for additional volunteers. You would need to be vetted prior to being accepted as a packer or as a volunteer who helps with distribution. The vetting process includes fulfilling all qualifications such as a background check, references, waivers and more. 

 

JFCS and Samaritan have a partnership agreement to bring the comfort of Jewish traditions and values to Hospice care. Volunteers can visit seriously ill patients and their families, often providing respite care for the family members.  These volunteers are required to be vetted by Samaritan, including references and a background check. Each volunteer is also required to attend 12 hours of classroom training and one hour of in the field training.  They will be required to have initial PPD testing for Rubeola, Rubella, and Varicella titers, plus clearance from their doctor saying that they are fit to volunteer.
