Jewish Celebrations

Are you a retired teacher, social worker, or have any experience with groups? Or maybe you share a strong passion for  Jewish education and Jewish holidays? Please consider joining us for a NEW volunteer experience bringing Jewish celebrations to older adults in facilities who otherwise don’t have access to it. This would be a 1-year commitment of approximately 2 hours per month. Each volunteer would facilitate a one-hour universally themed program focused on holiday celebrations and topics of Jewish cultural and historical interest such as:

Volunteers will be assigned to one assisted living facility or other apartment complex in South Jersey. The curriculum is being created by Rabbi Nathan Weiner and Reva Farenback-Brateman, JFCS Geriatric Social Worker. Training may be held quarterly. Days and times at each facility are flexible based on your schedule. Some facilities do not allow minors, so we will match you with an appropriate facility based on your preferences. Interested volunteers must be fully vetted by our agency. Additional vetting may be necessary depending on the facility.

The staffing ratio for all events is approximately 1:3, ensuring that each participant gets the attention they need to fully enjoy the activity. Activities are held monthly, generally on Sunday afternoons.

JFCS and Samaritan have a partnership agreement to bring the comfort of Jewish traditions and values to Hospice care. Volunteers can visit seriously ill patients and their families, often providing respite care for the family members.  These volunteers are required to be vetted by Samaritan, including references and a background check. Each volunteer is also required to attend 12 hours of classroom training and one hour of in the field training.  They will be required to have initial PPD testing for Rubeola, Rubella, and Varicella titers, plus clearance from their doctor saying that they are fit to volunteer.

Volunteer: Bite-Size Community Wide Service Projects

Perhaps you’d just like to designate one special day a year when you and your loved ones can volunteer together as a family. Or maybe you are a student who would like to do a community service project with your class. We have wonderful opportunities for all ages. One way to do this is by offering your professional expertise (legal, financial, etc.) and conducting no-cost individual consultations to help JFCS clients navigate legal issues or better manage their money. You may also opt to hold your own food drive for our Betsy and Peter Fischer Food Pantries. Similarly, you can hold a gift drive during a holiday season, collect personal care items for our domestic violence clients, or come up with your own special way to make a difference!

Or maybe you are a student who would like to do a community service project with your class. We have wonderful opportunities for all ages. One way to do this is by offering your professional expertise (legal, financial, etc.) and conducting no-cost individual consultations to help JFCS clients navigate legal issues or better manage their money. You may also opt to hold your own food drive for our Betsy and Peter Fischer Food Pantries. Similarly, you can hold a gift drive during a holiday season, collect personal care items for our domestic violence clients, or come up with your own special way to make a difference!

Once you become a fan of Bite-Size community wide service projects, you will be notified throughout the year as registration for our events open. Events include:

Community Mitzvah Day Lions Gate Intergenerational Events - Bingo and Dancing for all ages Holiday meal deliveries including Rosh Hashanah, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Purim, Shavuot, and more! Flagging of the graves in honor of Memorial Day High Holiday Community Wide Food Sort

Disability Services Department (formerly Special Needs): The goal of this program is to develop programs and services in support of individuals with disabilities and their families, so that they can lead more independent and fulfilled lives as citizens of our community. Volunteers can help in help in several ways.

Supports to Achieve Independent Living (SAIL): High school and college students (18+ only, no minors may participate), can provide peer interactions for young adults with disabilities at social events, including cultural events, informal get-togethers, life-long learning classes, community service projects and participation in Special Olympics. Social Outings and Recreation (SOAR) Facilitators: High school and college students (any age) can interact on weekends with those individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, who need greater oversight than those in the SAIL program.
